We’re taking a break until fall to get organized for the fall harvest season, but we’ll keep you informed about community food events, gardening workshops, etc.  Thanks to everyone for their wonderful work so far in 2010!

2010 Harvest Total

I just wanted to take a moment to draw attention to our 2010 harvest total.  We are over 14,000 pounds for the year!  Thanks to everyone who has volunteered their time and talents for Harvest Sacramento, Soil Born Farms, and Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

Let’s keep the momentum going with our Land Park events this week!  We still need volunteers for the Canvassing Day on Wednesday from 4 pm – 7 pm, and the Harvest  on Saturday from 9 am – 1 pm.  And, we’re always looking for trucks, ladders, picker poles & 5 gallon buckets, so bring them along!

Midtown Harvest Total!

We’re pleased to say that 25 dedicated volunteers harvested 1345 pounds of citrus last weekend, donated directly to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. We picked quite a variety of citrus, including really nice looking oranges with a smattering of Eureka lemons, grapefruit and a big haul …of not-so-heavy, but extremely delicious kumquats!

Thanks to everyone who spent part of their weekend with Harvest Sacramento! We’re looking forward to our upcoming events in Land Park. We hope you can join us!

We like having so much exciting news that our posts have to multi-task!  Stick with us, we’re going places.

East Sacramento Harvest (Part II) Recap

We followed up our orginal East Sacramento harvest with another two gleanings last weekend.

  • On Saturday, a crowd of over 30 volunteers braved the rain to harvest 2025 pounds of citrus from more than 30 homes.
  • On Sunday, a 30 more volunteers, as part of a free community class hosted by Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op netted an additional 945 pounds of citrus.  The harvest included lemons, grapefruit, oranges and mandarines.  After the harvest, volunteers were treated a fabulous meal of homemade lentil soup, greens and cookies (made by Eileen Murray of Eileen’s Kitchen).

Thanks to everyone who participated over the weekend and helping to bring our 2010 Harvest Total to an amazing 12,367 pounds.

Upcoming Events in Midtown!

Midtown Canvassing

  • When: Wednesday, March 10th, 4PM-7PM
  • Where: Fremont Park (between 15th and 16th, P and Q)
  • What: We’ll walk through Midtown, identifying homes with trees where residents are willing to donate  fruit to our cause.  This part of the project is extremely crucial…we are expecting a large turnout of volunteers to harvest, so we need to make sure we have plenty of trees!

  • Where: Winn Park (between 2th and 28th, P and Q)
  • To RSVP:  Email harvestsacramento@gmail.com or call Courtney Cagle at (916) 231-0496.
